It is interest to note that Russia is evolving considerably its military sophistication.

While Afghanistan, Chechenya and even the recent Georgia Russia was using the classic “shock and awe” campaign …in Crimea used much more a psychological/ bribery / intimidation /propaganda technique.

If you look at the numbers Russia invaded with just 10,000 well armed people with few lightly armoured vehicles (disguised as security contractors – very smart) against a force of 16,000 Ukrainian defenders.

In three weeks Ukrainians and their 190 bases surrendered with barely a shot fired.

A masterpiece that will go in the military textbooks.

And now they are granting special economic favours to Crimea (while Ukraine has to beg the IMF for money accepting disgraceful condition).

The Western intelligence did not caught a wind of it.

In a few years as Ukraine is suffocated by the IMF conditions and Russia smart moves, Ukraine will beg Russia to come and save them.

They should shoot the next 007 in Russia, at His Majesty Putin Service, to be fair.

There are evidence (even you tube videos and geolock so you know it is real, thank you) of Russian amassing new heavy weaponry on the border of Ukraine.

At least 24 Gunship Mi24, several columns of battle tanks by  road and train.

Well you amass that level of fire power just to tell Ukraine to stand down against such a force – anyway you will be killed.

The natural target would be the Dniepr River (which by the way was the last “real” stand of the Germans in WW2 against USSR).

It would also leave West Ukraine  (the Pro USA one) with no sea-access. Shall we do a repeat of the siege of West Berlin too?

It feels so Europe around 1933 unless the US intervene for real.

In that case let’s make a minor makeover (in minor, as Russia is not yet at USSR level) to the Red Storm Rising book of Tom Clancy.

Mmmmhhh and someone bet 200 millions of options the US SP500 is going down…yesterday

After some confirmation that some Spetznaz (Russian SAS equivalent – but more specialised on the dark art of political unrest and terrorism) have been operating in Ukraine (outside Crimea), there are unconfirmed voices that  the Ukrainian leadership hired professional security experts (what now are called contractors – the old  mercenaries) from the infamous Greystone Corporation (the one that was called Blackwater and then every few years changes name as it gets caught up in killing, shooting etc. Practically hires ex SEAL, SAS specialist for private use). Interesting

Ukraine is one of the first emerging market to go in flame. As often I told you the economic crisis can easily become a revolution.

How did it start.

The start actually is quite a few year ago when Russia, taking advantage of the US being bogged down in the Middle East, re-conquered (politically this time) the ex USSR countries that had been swayed towards the West in the 1990s.

The came the US  disengagement from the Middle East and the famous President Obama speech Pacific Pivot Strategy. What President Obama did not clearly tell is that more than a Pacific Pivot…in reality the US was doing an Old Enemies Pivot, Russia and China.

Ukraine,  substantially,  is a punishment to Russia for the Syria affront when Putin shamed Obama into not following up on its threat (by the way, as only 4% of the nerve gas has been destroyed till now, there is quite a substantial US deployment in Jordan). Now Russia 1 US 1. This  has been shown to us from an intercepted call published by a German newspaper (guess what…not only the US spy!)

The issue is that the demonstrations are going beyond the original intent, as the economic condition are ripe for a proper revolution. They are actually getting more than they bargained for. Tonight there are news of police switching side to to the protesters.

This is actually the third phase of the Global Financial Crisis. First Share Markets. then economic crisis and last one, revolution in the weakest country. I was waiting for Greece…got it wrong. As of now we have Ukraine and Thailand on the brink.
