Two men rose to power in March – one good and one bad.
The good one is Jon Faust (even if the name is not good…Goethe’s Faust makes a pact with the devil). He is the new appointed economic adviser to the Fed and also served under Bernanke and Yellen.
So he is good, knows is job. He will carry more influence than before as Jerome Powell is a lawyer, not an economist.
The other one is Peter Navarro – the man behind the steel tariffs and the new America First strategy.
His main enemies (yes enemies) are China and Germany. Why I know it? Well, Navarro published a few books with kind of names than do not leave any doubt (Death by China, The coming China wars etc). It is also against the US companies that “put China in front of national interests”.
Definitely it is a mix that clouds the future. The Fed will have to take into accounts the possible trade wars before thinking about the interest rates.
